What is Birthdancing?

Birthdancing® is a safe, fun and effective approach to prenatal
fitness and natural childbirth. Birthdancing® is based on an ancient,
time-honored dance which has been practiced since the dawn of civilization. The modern name ascribed to this dance is "Belly Dance." Birthdancing® incorporates the slow, calming, hypnotic movements of bellydancing which increase abdominal control, relieve discomforts and encourage relaxed breathing. Inspirational music is used to energize, center and focus the attention and bring body, mind and spirit into harmony. These prenatal exercises are designed for women in all stages of pregnancy.

How Does It Help Labor?

Soothing circular movements and figure 8’s can give comfort in early
labor, while vibrating shimmies can help position the baby and relax the pelvic floor. Body waves and undulations can help move the baby
through the birth canal. Students are taught isolations and maneuvers which control four parts of their torso: the pelvis, abdomen, diaphragm, and ribcage. Special exercises for pregnancy strengthen the pelvic floor and enhance pushing in labor.

Is It Safe?

Yes, only certified Dancing Thru Pregnancy fitness instructors are hired to teach classes.
The program follows the guidelines of the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists
for exercise during and after pregnancy. As long as there are no medical problems,
healthy women are encouraged to participate in regular moderate exercise. We request
you speak to your OB/GYN or nurse-midwife before beginning this or any exercise program.

which will take 10 minutes of your time, and we will inform you of the results when the data is all in.

Background Information

Birthdancing® is based on belly dance movements and geometric forms found in ancient
Middle Eastern art. It is comprised of: circles, crescents, figure 8’s, zigzags, waves and
spirals. These movements are relaxing, centering and meditative in addition to being very
energizing for many women. Its calming meditative quality aids focus and breathing practices. Birthdancing® was developed through research by professional Middle Eastern dancer
and licensed Dancing Thru Pregnancy® instructor Laura LeRoy.
DTP® was first developed
25 years ago at Yale-New Haven Hospital by professor and certified childbirth educator Ann Cowlin. Birthdancing® continues to be refined and
updated with information gained from the
latest medical studies.
